For the first time in ten years, fewer school-leavers are enrolling in college.

The entire extent of the suffering brought on by the competition for jobs after a record decline in grades is now revealed by new statistics.

According to dataHE figures, the enrollment rate was 37.4%, down from 38.2% in 2021 and the lowest level since 2012. The percentage of the population who enroll in higher education is referred to as the admission rate.

The current entrance rate may vary as clearance is still available for at least another month, but it is still anticipated to be lower than previous year. More than a week after results day, the data was collected through live tallies.

The most competitive admissions round ever was brought about by a rise in the number of people aged 18 and above and efforts made by colleges to reduce enrollment.

The number of unplaced applications increased from 29,400 (10.1%) last year to 40,490 (13.2%) over the weekend.

It follows 43,000 cleared entries on results day, the most in ten years.

Co-founder of dataHE Mark Corver called the decline in admission rate this year “very rare.”
