African Energy Week announces a collaboration with Ipieca

African Energy Week (https://AECWeek.com), one of Africa’s best oil and gas events, is pleased to announce the signing of a collaboration agreement with Ipieca, the worldwide oil and gas association dedicated to improving environmental and social performance during the energy transition.

Ipieca will participate in panel discussions and generate discourse around how Africa can sustainably grow up its oil and gas production in line with the Paris Agreement while also contributing to the region’s energy security as an official partner of AEW 2022, Africa’s top investment forum for the oil and gas industry, which will take place from 18 to 21 October 2022 in Cape Town.

Ipieca, which was founded in 1974 at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme, brings together members from across the entire value chain as well as external stakeholders to develop and share best practices to help the industry advance its climate action, environmental responsibility, social performance, and integrated sustainability.

In February 2022, Ipieca launched a new edition of its Flaring management guidance, in collaboration with the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) and the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR), which provides a framework for industry, government, and regulators to reduce or eliminate routine flaring and instead use the gas as a sustainable energy resource.

Furthermore, the guidance makes recommendations on how the government and authorities can encourage the constructive use of gas rather than flaring.

The Flaring Management Guidance can help African countries and growing gas hubs in the region reduce emissions while increasing energy production.

During AEW, Ipieca will illustrate how its suite of guidance, tools, and supporting materials can help businesses of all sizes meet the increased energy demand required for global prosperity while also lowering emissions, protecting the environment, and contributing to the host communities where they operate.

Brian Sullivan, Ipieca Executive Director, said, “Ipieca is proud to be a supporting partner of AEW. This event brings together the key players in the African energy industry with their counterparts in the global industry to work on scaling up the affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy essential to achieving the ambitions at the heart of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and ensure wellbeing and prosperity for all”.

“Collaboration between global oil and gas market associations has become a vital need to advance the energy transition, ensure it is just and that it addresses energy access, affordability and sustainability issues. This is what Africa needs and one of the reasons why AEW is partnering with an industry leader such as Ipieca. The partnership with Ipieca will help Africa to prioritize sustainable practices across the entire oil and gas value chain,” said Tomas C. Gerbasio, Strategy and Business Development Director at African Energy Chamber (AEC), the voice of the African energy sector and organizers of AEW.

A delegation from Ipieca will attend high-level discussions and the NOC, Energy Transition, and Upstream forums at AEW 2022 to examine actions that African NOCs and upstream players may take to improve environmental and social performance in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources.
