At least 95 people have died, hundreds have been wounded, and thousands of houses have been demolished in Afghanistan due to flooding, according to officials in the crisis-ridden nation on Tuesday.
According to officials, the fatalities happened in 10 provinces over the course of the previous 10 days as the nation struggles with an economic and humanitarian crisis made worse by Western sanctions imposed when the Taliban regained control of the government last year.
According to CNN’s Maulawi Sharafuddin Muslim, deputy minister for disaster management, emergency food assistance has been dispatched to several flood-affected districts, and humanitarian groups have pledged to provide emergency help, but it may not be enough.
These impacted households, including women and children, need shelter as winter approaches.
All of their gardens and fields used for agriculture have either been destroyed entirely or had their harvests harmed,” said Muslim.
“These people’s position is only going to become worse in the next weeks and months unless they are assisted in returning to regular life.”
A number of natural catastrophes and severe weather incidents, including an earthquake in June that claimed more than 1,000 lives, have lately affected Afghanistan.
Muslim urged relief organisations, the UN, and the international community to assist flood-affected Afghans not just with immediate necessities like food, housing, and medication but also with long-term assistance since many people have lost their houses, livelihoods, and supplies of drinking water.
