According to reports, an Arizona free-fall parachute training practice accident claimed the life of a US Navy SEAL.

Following the tragic training accident at an airfield in Marana, Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst was transported to Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix where he was later declared deceased, according to a statement from the Naval Special Warfare Command to Fox News.

The Navy stated that further remark on the tragedy would be “inappropriate” until a report was finished because the accident’s cause is still being investigated.

Navy Special Warfare Command’s commander, Rear Adm. Keith Davids, expressed his condolences to the Ernst family.

At the time of the incident, Ernst was assigned to a Naval Special Warfare East Coast squad.

Operators in the Naval Special Warfare community routinely practice free-falling maneuvers and typically carry out these manoeuvres at great heights with a low opening known as “HALO.”

Ernst enlisted in the Navy in August 2009, and three years later he joined the SEAL team.

Having participated in combat in three separate theaters of war, Enrst received three Combat Action Ribbons, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Silver Star during his time in the military, the third highest honor for bravery given to a member of the armed forces.

Mike was a fantastic friend. He was a committed NSW Sailor who selflessly guided his teammates while applying his abilities and skills to some of our country’s most difficult tasks, according to Adm. Keith Davids.

Ernst is survived by his wife and their two young daughters, ages 2 and 5.

Ernst’s passing makes the Navy’s fourth training-related fatality in the previous 14 months, according to Military.com.
