Since the Packers’ loss to the Giants, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been battling with a right thumb injury, and the condition is worse than initially believed.
According to NFL Network, the injury was caused by a hit from Giants linebacker Oshane Ximines on October 9 in London and is an avulsion fracture.
This form of damage happens when the ligament separates from its attachment along with a portion of the bone. Avulsion fractures are so severe that they are frequently treated surgically. Injuries can influence a quarterback’s grip and, thus, his accuracy, etc.
Rodgers has not missed a game since sustaining the injury and will face the Eagles on Sunday night. Since Week 6, he has been listed as injured and has been limited in many practices.
Rodgers has discounted the injury despite being on track for his poorest statistical season and second-worst passer rating of his career.
“I believe I’ve played with worse injuries,” Rodgers told reporters over the week. “There would be a few plays in every game, perhaps a slightly inside snap or a hit that would startle it somewhat. Simply living with occasional dull ache and persevering through it.”
According to NFL Network, if the thumb has not fully healed by now, surgery will almost certainly be necessary. This surgery would take place after the season, meaning Rodgers could play the rest of the year with a thumb injury.
