According to the statement, gunmen in two SUVs opened fire on spectators gathering after a soccer game. At least eight injuries were reported by local media.

Refugio Amaro Luna, 57, a former mayor of Yecapixtla, was among those slain, according to the city’s mayor, Heladio Rafael Sánchez, in a Facebook post.

Sánchez said that he “strongly opposed” the shooting and encouraged officials to ascertain what transpired and “punish those guilty.”

The only information the authorities gave about the casualties was that one of the other fatalities was between the ages of 18 and 20.
