According to police, a 6-year-old pupil shot a teacher during a fight on Friday at an elementary school in Virginia. According to a statement from the Newport News Police Department, no pupils were hurt in the incident at Richneck Elementary School.

At a press conference that evening, Police Chief Steve Drew assured the media that the shooting was not an accident.

The teacher, a 30-year-old woman, allegedly had a gunshot wound that required immediate medical attention, according to the chief. The teacher’s condition was stable on Saturday, according to a Riverside Regional Medical Center spokeswoman.

The chief reported that the youngster had been arrested. He said there was no other party involved in the incident.

In order to help us provide this young kid with the greatest services possible, Drew stated, “We have been in communication with our commonwealth attorney and some other agencies.

The chief claimed that a handgun was used in the altercation and he was interested in its origin.

According to Drew, the shooting only happened in one classroom at the school.

This wasn’t a case where a student or any other people were running down the hallways firing actively, according to Drew.

Drew spoke with the victim and her family, according to a statement from a police spokesperson on Saturday, and she has improved. Police added in the statement that they “Because of the ongoing nature of the investigation, we will not be releasing any further information at this time,”

The incident, according to Mayor Phillip Jones, “hurts my heart.”

It’s a bad day for Newport News, according to Jones. We will use what we’ve learned from this and rebuild ourselves.

George Parker III, the superintendent of schools, stated that the incident took place in a first-grade classroom.

Our students learned about gun violence today, Parker added.

This is awful, he continued. This is something that should never happen, and I believe that everyone is shocked and aware of the fact that there is much work to be done as a community to ensure that incidents like this don’t happen.

According to Parker, metal detectors are employed erratically throughout the school system. On Monday, there won’t be any classes at the school.
