Djokovic eases over Rublev to secure berth in semi-finals

The fifth-ranked tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, advanced to the Australian Open semifinals on Wednesday after defeating Andrey Rublev.

In the men’s singles quarterfinal at the Rod Laver Arena, Djokovic defeated Rublev in three straight sets, 6-1; 6-2; 6-4, tying the record of tennis icon Andre Agassi for the longest winning run at a grand slam.

Djokovic told ausopen.com that his performance was comparable to that of the previous night’s fourth round. “I could not be more pleased with my tennis. I have been playing exceptionally well from the back of the court, and I enjoy playing in these conditions and on this court.”

The nine-time record-setting Australian Open champion will fight in his 10th semi-final against American Tommy Paul, who earlier in the day defeated fellow countryman Ben Shelton 7-6(6); 6-3; 5-7; 6-4.

In another semi-final, the Greek tennis sensation Stefano Tsitsipas will face Karen Khachanov after an outstanding performance against Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday.

With one foot already in the final, Djokovic will attempt to advance and set his sights on a second Australian Open championship on Sunday.
