8 suspects have been arrested for the alleged forgery of Norval Morrisseau artworks in Canada

Eight individuals are facing a total of 40 charges as a result of a police investigation into the forgery of artwork by Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau. The Thunder Bay Police Service initiated the investigation into the alleged forgery in 2020, and later enlisted the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police due to the scale of the investigation.
Five of the suspects are from Thunder Bay.

In total, the investigation led to the seizure of over 1,000 pieces of forged Morrisseau artwork. Norval Morrisseau, who died in 2007, was a renowned artist from the Ojibway Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation in northwestern Ontario. Morrisseau is widely regarded as the founder of the Woodlands School of art, and his works have been displayed in galleries across Canada, including at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

The Ontario Provincial Police held a news conference in Orillia, Ontario, on Friday morning, announcing the outcome of the investigation. Thunder Bay police officials were present at the conference.
