6.8-magnitude earthquake killed at least one person in Mexico City early Thursday


Early on Thursday, a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 rocked Mexico, swaying buildings and killing at least one person in the capital. As earthquake warnings sounded, residents gathered in the streets.

Just three days before, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that jolted western and central Mexico and left two dead struck soon after 1 a.m.

The western state of Michoacan, which is close to the Pacific coast, was the epicentre of Thursday’s earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. At a depth of around 15 miles, the epicentre was located approximately 29 miles southwest of Aguililla, Michoacan.

The state of Michoacan’s authorities said that the tremor was felt all across. It mentioned landslides on the route linking Michoacan and Guerrero with the coast and damage to a structure in Uruapan.

The aftershock from Monday’s earthquake, according to tweets from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was also felt in the states of Colima, Jalisco, and Guerrero.

The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced on Twitter that a lady who was killed after falling down her steps in a busy district.

The recent earthquake shook a nation that was already uneasy.

The stronger earthquake on Monday marked the third significant quake to occur on September 19—in 1985, 2017 and now 2022.

The earthquake exercises that are held annually on September 19 to remember the horrific 1985 quake that killed almost 9,500 people happened fairly soon after the quakes in 2017 and 2022.

According to Agence France-Presse, the national seismological service said that the timing of the earthquake on Monday was only a coincidence. The agency said, “There is no scientific justification to explain it.”
