3 killed, 12 wounded after 200-foot volcanic fall

Saturday, rescue services reported that three climbers perished and twelve were wounded after they fell while ascending the Carihuairazo volcano in Ecuador.

In this situation, a lady aged 47 and two males aged 45 and 50 perished, according to ECU911 rescue services. Due to inclement weather and nighttime, it was impossible to remove the dead.

Six women and six men between the ages of 39 and 58 were sent to hospitals in Riobamba and Ambato. ECU911 said that several of the wounded climbers had contusions and fractures and were evacuated by plane.

The climbers plummeted 60 meters while trying to ascend the middle Andean peak (196 feet).

Carihuairazo, a 5,018-meter giant in the province of Tungurahua, is next to Chimborazo, the highest peak in the nation at almost 6,200 meters.

The three deceased climbers were all Ecuadorians, and recovery efforts were set to resume on Sunday.

In June, a lady died and her climbing partner was wounded after they ascended the off-limits, extremely active summit of Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano.
