19-year-old boy dies on the first day of classes at Lewis & Clark College in Portland when a hammock fastened to a brick masonry column fell

On the first day of classes at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, a hammock tied to a brick masonry column fell, killing a 19-year-old freshman and injuring two others.

The student, whose identity has not yet been made public, was a freshman at the liberal arts college.

Two women aged 18 were transported by ambulance to the hospital. According to KOIN News, one of the teenagers had an abdominal injury, while the other sustained an arm injury.

Monday evening at 8:15 p.m., at a central campus area, a bizarre accident took place. Six students were resting in three separate hammocks linked to columns when one of the columns fell and landed on them.

After the column collapsed, witnesses attempted CPR on the young man, but he was pronounced dead at the site.

The identities of all students affected in the disaster have not yet been made public.

Lewis & Clark officials issued a statement late Monday: ‘We are devastated to report that earlier this evening, a tragic accident occurred on the undergraduate campus in which one of our students was killed and two others were injured,’

‘We are working to contact the students’ families and will report more information as it becomes available. We are deeply saddened by the shocking loss of a member of our community.’

Monday was the first day of classes at Lewis & Clark College, a liberal arts college with around 2,000 students in Portland, Oregon. Marcia Smith Krieger, senior United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado, is an alumnus.
