Zelensky’s war joke was on Letterman’s Netflix show

The president of Ukraine, Zelensky, mocked Russian dictator Vladimir Putin during an appearance on a Netflix talk program.

Typically, Cardi B, Lizzo, and Will Smith have been on David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction; but, this time, the seasoned host of the late-night talk show traveled to the Ukraine to speak with Volodymyr Zelensky.

David Letterman, 75, met with the leader of Ukraine in an underground bunker 300 feet below a Kyiv metro station to talk about the continuing violence in that nation.

Before making the unconventional shift to politics, Zelensky, 44, was a well-known television comedian who was eager to make fun of the Russian president.

Zelensky, a Jewish guy himself, told Letterman his joke on Vladimir Putin in Ukrainian.

Two Jews cross paths in Odessa. And how is the situation there? the one asks the other. How do they put it?

The other responds, “Well, what do they say, they claim there’s war.”

Which war?

“Russia and NATO are at war.”

“How’s the battle coming along?”

Well, 70,000 Russian soldiers were lost, all the rockets were fired, and a lot of military hardware was destroyed.

“What about NATO?”

What about NATO, though? NATO is still on the way.

The President’s jab at Putin was met with laughter from the Ukrainian crowd.

Zelensky’s joke makes fun of Russia’s refusal to refer to the conflict as a “war” and instead refers to it as a “special military operation.”

It also makes fun of the fact that Ukrainian soldiers had managed to repel Russian assaults without the direct aid of NATO forces.

Since the invasion in February, the Russian administration has blatantly underestimated the Ukrainian onslaught. Putin’s soldiers believed they could easily advance to Kyiv in February, but they have been dealt blows and forced back in places like Kharkiv and Kherson.

Zelensky and David Letterman, both 75, met in an underground bunker 300 feet below a Kyiv metro station to talk about the continuing violence there.

On December 12, the Netflix special had its debut. A Ukrainian audience was allowed to see the interview with the Ukrainian president, which was recorded in an underground bunker in October.

Before traveling to Ukraine, Letterman admits to having some reservations. In his voiceover narration before to the interview, the seasoned US comic noted, “When we were arranging this trip, I wasn’t sure what to anticipate.”

The city had been cleared of Russian forces for many months. However, Russia sent missiles and drones into Ukraine only a week ago, with some of them hitting Kyiv, Letterman stated in the montage.

During the interview, the bunker’s siren suddenly goes off. What ought we to do, Letterman queries.

Zelensky, though, hilariously said, “Nothing,” while sporting a black sweatshirt that proclaims, “I’m Ukrainian.”

Assuring Letterman not to be alarmed, he continued by explaining that this had become a typical aspect of life in Ukraine.
