XC40 and C40 Recharge versions have enhanced charging speed and range

The range on a single charge is one of the most commonly asked topics about our completely electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. and “How long is the charging time?”

As part of a new set of product upgrades, we’ve enhanced the range (WLTP) and charging for the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge compared to the previous model year, increasing range by up to 41 miles (66 kilometers) on some variants*.

Furthermore, the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge are offered with three** new powertrains. These include two*** rear-wheel-drive variations – the first rear-wheel-drive product we’ve offered in 25 years – and a revamped all-wheel-drive performance model.

Rear-wheel drive, extended range, and quicker charging for fully electric Volvo C40 and XC40 cars.

Fully electric Volvo C40 and XC40 cars will have rear-wheel drive, increased range, and faster charging.

The permanent magnet electric motor of the second generation that drives the rear axles of the completely electric C40 and XC40 cars was developed in-house by Volvo Cars.

Our Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Javier Varela, stated that these upgrades represent a significant step in the company’s efforts to become an all-electric vehicle manufacturer by 2030. Range and charge times are becoming increasingly important to our consumers, and these enhancements make our completely electric vehicles even more desirable.

Let’s begin with the two newly available rear-wheel-drive powertrains. The single motor with standard range is powered by a 175kW permanent magnet electric motor (e-motor), which represents a 3% improvement in power output compared to the outgoing 170kW single-motor front-wheel-drive option.

The XC40 Recharge single motor retains the same 69kWh battery capacity, but advances in cooling efficiency allow it an extended range of up to 286 miles (461 kilometers) on the WLTP test cycle, up from 264 miles (461 kilometers) previously (WLTP).

The standard range single motor is driven by a 175kW permanent magnet electric motor (e-motor).

The range of the single-motor C40 Recharge increases to 296 miles (476 kilometers) from 272 miles (438 kilometers) (WLTP). Using a 130kW DC public charger, it takes around 34 minutes to charge a battery from 10 to 80 percent.

If you desire greater power and range, you may also opt for a larger battery paired with an 185kW permanent magnet e-motor on the rear axle****. This second new variation is equipped with an 82kWh battery pack, which increases range to 320 miles (515 km) for the XC40 Recharge single motor extended range and to 331 miles (533 km) (WLTP) for the C40 Recharge single motor extended range.

The bigger battery pack now enables charging at a maximum rate of 200kW DC (formerly 150kW DC), while a charge from 10 to 80 percent takes about 28 minutes.

These upgrades also benefit all-wheel-drive models, resulting in even more astounding range enhancements. The former arrangement of two 150kW e-motors on the front and rear axles has been replaced with an 183kW permanent magnet e-motor on the rear axle and a new 117kW asynchronous electric motor on the front axle.

The XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD can now travel up to 311 miles (500 km) on a single charge, an increase of 39 miles (62 km) over the previous model. The C40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD’s range has increased from 280 miles (451 kilometers) to 315 miles (507 kilometers) (WLTP).

Whenever possible, exterior renovations also serve to improve efficiency. For instance, a new 19-inch alloy wheel for the XC40 and C40 Recharge not only improves the overall appearance of the cars, but its aerodynamic shape also helps to minimize drag.

The plug-in hybrid models in our 90 and 60 series receive a new two-phase on-board charger that allows for faster charging (market dependant). The new onboard charger nearly doubles the maximum charging capacity of these automobiles to 6.4kW.

Charging times depend on variables such as ambient temperature, battery temperature, charging equipment, battery state, and automobile condition.
