The Federal Aviation Administration reported Saturday that a worker was tragically injured on the ramp at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama, where an American Airlines regional carrier flight was parked.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the event that happened while Embraer E175 Flight 3408 from Dallas was parked at the gate. The FAA reported that the airport was closed following the incident.

The early inquiry, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, shows that the employee was killed in an accident involving a running engine of the aircraft.

Envoy Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group, operated the route.

The airport said that a Piedmont Airlines ground crew member was killed, but did not provide further details.

Saturday afternoon, an employee of the Montgomery Regional Airport was killed in an incident.

American claimed in a statement that it was heartbroken by the catastrophe, which included a Piedmont employee.

“We are committed to ensuring that everyone involved has the assistance they require during this difficult time,” the airline stated, declining to comment further on the ongoing inquiry.
