Woman sentenced defrauds employers for more than two decades

For more than 21 years, a lady defrauded her job before receiving a punishment. She began committing fraud between 1998 and 2017.

The Hawks said that Linda Ebersohn, 59, entered a guilty plea to 867 counts of theft.

Ebersohn defrauded the business where she worked for 21 years as a debtors and creditors clerk.

According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, she used the system’s current creditors’ information but deposited payments into her personal bank account.

Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi said, “she further distributed the money to her husband and two children’s accounts.”

The fraud was reported to the Middelburg-based Hawk’s Serious Commercial Crime investigation unit.

The accused was connected to the crime after the investigation was completed.

The woman was detained in November 2018 together with her family members who split the stolen funds. The next day, they appeared in court and were charged.

However, the accusations against her husband and her two children were dropped during the Friday sentencing. This is in response to Ebersohn’s guilty plea in front of the Middelburg Regional Court, claimed Sekgotodi.

Five of the fifteen years she was given in prison are suspended. She must not be found guilty of a crime involving dishonesty throughout the suspension time in order for this to happen.

“The Hawks’ Provincial Head, Major General Zodwa Mokoena cherished the investigating officer and the prosecuting authority for securing such a sentence which will serve as a lesson to other thieves that their wrongful deeds will catch up with them,” Sekgotodi said.

A mother of two has been sentenced to two years in prison after scamming a cosmetics company of R4 million.

At Amka Products, Debbie Buitendag, 40, worked as a creditors clerk. Popular cosmetic brands like Black Like Me, Satiskin, and Clere Products are produced by the company.

She altered the banking information of a company that does business with Amka Products using a similar strategy to Ebersohn. She switched it out for a Standard Bank account of her own. She then purchased a Ford Ranger for her husband with some of the R4 million.
