Wind warning for the weekend: 60 km/h southeaster in Cape Town and 70 km/h off the coast

Friday, January 27th, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for wind and waves in the Western Cape. The warning key indicates a moderate probability of modest weather-related consequences.

This weekend, there will be strong winds in western Cape Town.
The weather warning is in effect from Saturday at midday through Sunday, January 29 at 23:59 UTC.

“Strong and gusty southeast winds (50-60 km/h) are expected over Cape Town on Saturday afternoon,” the weather service reported.

On Saturday afternoon, between Lambert’s Bay and Hermanus, there will be severe southeasterly winds of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour. Sunday is forecast to be breezy throughout.

Along with the strong gusts, wave heights of 3.0 to 4.0 meters are anticipated, resulting in turbulent and choppy seas due to the rapid, successive occurrence of steep waves.

The potential consequences of the strong winds and severe seas include:

Navigational difficulties at sea.
Small boats and personal watercraft are susceptible to taking on water and capsize.
Expect seaside activities to be disrupted.
Short-term disruptions to local harbors and ports are possible.
In False Bay, sand could cause roadways near beaches to become slick.
