Watch live: U.S. commemorates 9/11

On September 11, 2001, terrorists carried out the bloodiest acts of foreign terrorism on American territory in New York and at the Pentagon. Throughout the nation, memorial events honor the victims of September 11th. Nearly 3,000 Americans perished as a result of the assaults on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a hijacked plane near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

As a result of the attacks, the site of the World Trade Center towers in New York City, now known as Ground Zero, will have a ceremony on Sunday, as will memorial ceremonies at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon in Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C.

The service at the National September 11th Memorial in New York begins with a moment of silence to commemorate the 8:46 a.m. ET impact of American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower. Moments of silence will also be observed at 9:03 a.m., when United Airlines Flight 175 collided with the South Tower; at 9:37 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 77 collided with the Pentagon; at 9:59 a.m., to commemorate the collapse of the South Tower; at 10:30 a.m., to mark the time United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania; and at 10:28 a.m., to commemorate the collapse of Vice President Harris and Doug Emhoff are present and participating in New York City.

Families of those died in the 2001 attacks and 1993 World Trade Center bombing will read the names of all 2,983 deceased.

At the Pentagon, commemorative festivities include the raising of a flag, the laying of a wreath, and speeches from Vice President Joe Biden. Jill Biden commemorates the event during the Jet 93 National Memorial Service in Shanksville, where the hijacked flight landed into a field after passengers resisted the attackers. At the event honoring the victims, their relatives, survivors, and first responders, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland also delivers remarks.
