‘Wasn’t he unopposed?’ – Andile Lungisa LOSES Eastern Cape ANC contest

The news filtering through from the Eastern Cape ANC’s latest conference will hit Andile Lungisa like a jug to the head. The controversial politician has ultimately fallen short, in his bid to become the party’s provincial treasurer.

Following a busy weekend, Lungisa looked like he would be a shoe-in for the position. Initially running as the only person who met the required threshold for the role, a shock nomination was made on the floor yesterday.

Zolile Williams, thought to be a close ally of Oscar Mabuyane, had his name put forward by supporters on Sunday. However, with him currently serving as a municipal manager, Williams will have to relinquish this role in order to serve in the ANC’s regional Treasury – something Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has assured us WILL happen.

From ‘unopposed’ to second place – via a candidate who will have to resign…

Williams claimed 799 votes to Andile Lungisa’s 683. From being the early favourite, the ANC heavyweight has now been left to lick his wounds. This is a particularly jarring result for the RET forces within the ruling party too, who had been hailing their chosen candidate as someone who’d bring radical change to the region.

For a brief period, it looked like Lungisa would run unopposed. But a vote from the floor put forward Zolile Williams’ name. A show of hands revealed that over 25% of delegates present wanted him to contest his well-known opponent.

This staunch show of defiance turned out to be a political masterstroke in a factional battle.
