Walmart has ceased the sale of dog-breeding restraints, which animal rights activists negatively refer to as “rape racks,” as reported by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

As the world’s largest retailer, Walmart was the only major retail chain offering these devices, popular among contentious puppy mills.

PETA’s spokesperson explained that these metal devices, also called “rape racks,” are used to hold female dogs in place, preventing them from resisting as they are mounted by male dogs.

After PETA filed a complaint against the Bentonville-based company on February 23, the $139.61 restraints were marked “out of stock” on Walmart’s website within three weeks.

Walmart has not yet responded to requests for comment. These restraints, called “breeding stands” on Walmart.com, are designed for pets of various sizes and show images of a large dog restrained with straps around its neck and abdomen.

They are intended to keep female dogs from biting male dogs during mating.

BreedingBusiness.com, in a March 12 post, acknowledges that breeding stands have been used by breeders globally for years, but questions the safety and morality of their use, which has been debated for years. The stands are typically used by breeders wanting to mate two aggressive dogs.

The post criticizes profit-driven breeders who use the stands even when a female dog is not prepared to mate, pointing out instances of dogs as young as six months old being used instead of the recommended two years old. BreedingBusiness.com describes forcing a dog to mate when it is not ready as “utterly gut-wrenching.”

PETA’s statement emphasizes that no one should be breeding more dogs in a world already struggling with homeless dog populations.

They praise Walmart’s decision to stop selling these restraints as an example of compassion and responsibility.

However, these devices are still available for purchase on major e-commerce sites like Amazon and eBay.
