Vladimir Makei, Belarusian Foreign Minister, dies

The foreign minister of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, passed away on Saturday, according to a brief report from the Belarusian national news agency Belta. He was 64.

Before joining the public service, Makei served in the Soviet Belarusian military from 1980 to 1993, rising to the rank of colonel.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Makei held a variety of positions, including deputy head of the State Protocol Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, envoy of the Republic of Belarus to the Council of Europe, and counselor of the Belarusian embassy in France.

The cause of death is yet unknown. Makei had held the position since 2012.
