Victorian storm: Thousands of Australians warned of torrential rain, damaging winds

The meteorological office has cautioned parts of Australia to prepare for an imminent “major rain event” that would bring heavy rain, flash flooding, thunderstorms, and severe winds.

On Wednesday evening and Thursday,’severe thunderstorms’ and up to 100 millimeters of rain are forecast to affect central and northern Victoria, while wind gusts might reach 100 kilometers per hour.

A warning for ‘heavy rains and destructive winds’ has been issued for the entire northern region of Tasmania from late Wednesday to the next day.

The southernmost state might receive up to 120mm of precipitation on Thursday, and up to 200mm at higher elevations.

This could result in “dangerous and life-threatening” flooding and landslides in the interior of north-west Tasmania, according to the weather office.
