Detective Leading Senior Constable Murray Gentner, who was previously involved in a scandal over sharing images of transgender footy legend Dani Laidley, has now been accused of sharing photos of dead corpses with colleagues.
Gentner is one of four officers who are alleged to have shared disturbing images of dead people on their mobile phones.
Victoria Police’s Professional Standards Command (PSC) accused the four officers of “disgraceful and improper conduct.
” It is not clear whether the images came from homicide scenes, fatal traffic accidents, or depicted people who died from natural causes.
None of the officers have been charged with any criminal offenses, but they will face an internal disciplinary hearing. Gentner was previously involved in a disciplinary hearing over allegations that he and three others shared images of Laidley wearing makeup and a wig when she was arrested for stalking in May 2020.
One of the photos showed Laidley in a wig and makeup being interviewed by two officers, while the other was a mugshot.
Laidley alleged that the photographs were accompanied by transphobic comments and invited public ridicule. She sued Victoria Police and received a confidential payout.
Gentner kept his job but was placed on a 12-month good behavior bond and was required to take a “respecting dignity” course.
He also appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on charges of misconduct by a public official and accessing and disclosing police information without reasonable excuse. However, the case was dismissed in May when the prosecution failed to establish that Gentner had a duty to not disclose the information about Laidley.
The new photo sharing allegations have come after Victoria Chief Commissioner Shane Patton warned that any breach of the force’s disciplinary code could result in dismissal.
He stated that police officers would be dismissed if they were found to have breached confidentiality or used unauthorized information from police databases.
Patton also revealed that 17 officers were dismissed for misconduct in the last 12 months, while 31 others resigned while under investigation because they saw the “writing on the wall.”
