Vale of Glamorgan home owners who leave it empty will be required to pay 100% more on their council tax

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has approved a proposal to impose a 100% council tax premium on long-term empty properties in 2023/24.

This will increase to 150% in 2024/25 and 200% in 2025/26. In addition, the council also voted to impose a 100% council tax premium on second homes in 2024/25.

The estimated potential revenue to be gained from the council tax premium on long-term empty properties is £924,000, and on second homes is £703,000.

The proposal was met with opposition from some council members and respondents to the consultation.

The majority of respondents were unsupportive of any change to the current policy, with 56.36% opposed to the council tax premiums.

Councillor Kevin Mahoney expressed concerns about the infringement of civil liberties for those who own second homes and wished to split their time between them.

However, the council defended the proposal, stating that there is an underlying shortage of housing in the Vale of Glamorgan and that the aim is to bring homes back into use.

According to the council, there are 528 long-term empty properties and 402 properties classified as second homes in the county.

Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Councillor Lis Burnett, emphasised that the premiums are aimed at encouraging the productive use of properties.

She acknowledged that people may own multiple properties, but if they are not being used productively, they should be prepared to make an additional contribution.
