The school of social work at the University of Southern California will no longer use the word “field” in its curriculum, citing its problematic roots in slavery.
The Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work at the University of Southern California stated that the move was necessary to promote anti-racist social work and diversity.
According to a letter dated January 9 and uploaded on Twitter, the department chose to remove the word “field” from its curriculum and replace it with “practicum.”
This update strengthens anti-racist social work practice by replacing anti-Black or anti-immigrant terminology with inclusive language, according to the letter.
The letter stated, “Language is potent, and phrases such as ‘entering the field’ or ‘field work’ may have negative connotations for descendants of slaves and immigrant workers.”

USC has said that it will make institutional changes to “honor and acknowledge inclusion and reject white supremacist, anti-immigrant, and anti-blackness ideologies”
USC stated in the letter, “We are committing to further align our actions, behaviors, and practices with anti-racism and anti-oppression, which requires a close and critical examination of our profession — our history, our biases, and our complicity in past and present injustices.”

Critics insulted the university’s attempt at inclusivity via social media.
One Twitter user stated, “As someone who spent more than seven years at USC and received two graduate degrees from this university, I am extremely ashamed of what is occurring there. I wonder how much of my money was used to develop this incredibly valuable innovation.”
A critic added, “This is just a fancy way of saying that the organization is overstaffed.”
Another irritated Twitter user remarked, “Important information. Improving the world one deleted phrase at a time.”
