US Senate intelligence says China is a threat, both militarily and through espionage

On Sunday, the heads of the House and Senate intelligence committees expressed concern about China’s growing influence, stating that the communist nation is a “threat, both militarily and through espionage.”

Republican Rep. Mike Turner, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, criticized the Biden administration for being too afraid to “provoke” Beijing, a sentiment echoed by Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) earlier in the day.

Turner noted that China has been building up its military and multiplying the number of nuclear weapons aimed at the US, as well as expanding its shipbuilding capacity.

He claimed that the administration is making the same mistake with China that it made with Russia during the early months of the Ukraine invasion, accusing them of being too timid in their approach.

He believes that the administration’s handling of the threat posed by TikTok is another example of the president’s fear of provoking China.

Warner, the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, stated that the US is in significant competition with China, emphasizing that national security is no longer just about guns and ships but also technology competition, particularly around artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and synthetic biology.

He argued that TikTok should be outlawed due to its potential use as a propaganda mechanism for the Communist Party of China and the fact that user data is stored in China.

He also criticized the Biden administration for failing to partner with Saudi Arabia against Iranian attacks and was surprised that Saudi Arabia turned to Iran for support.

In conclusion, China’s increasing influence is a concern for the US, with both Republicans and Democrats urging the Biden administration to take a more aggressive approach.

National security is no longer limited to traditional military methods, as technology is becoming an essential aspect of warfare.

Turner and Warner both believe that the US needs to be more assertive in its stance towards China and TikTok, recognizing the potential threat they pose to national security.

The situation with Saudi Arabia and Iran also highlights the need for the US to maintain strong relationships with its allies and provide necessary support in times of need.
