Unique California ‘dome home’ is up for sale for $2.1 million

A strange house built on lunar habitation design ideas in the midst of the Joshua Tree desert has recently gone on the market for $2.1 million.

The multi-million dollar mansions common in California are more similar to the renowned desert’s rock outcroppings than the Bonita Domes, a California residence.

The home, which was finished in 2014, took a spiritual healer called Lisa Starr seven years to construct. She drew inspiration from ideas created by Iranian-American architect Nader Khalili, who was hired by NASA to create dome-based buildings for heavenly living.

The 1,339 square foot home contains five bedrooms, a cocktail bar, a bathhouse, a pool, and a meditation temple. The grounds also include a bathhouse and a meditation temple.

For $780 per night, the mansion is also available for rent on Airbnb.

The strange house is about a five-minute walk from the Joshua Tree National Park gate.

It was constructed with SuperAdobe, a low-cost, enduring, and ecological building technique that Khalili helped to pioneer.

The procedure entails creating a frame from coils of wire, which is then surrounded with and filled with layers of sandbags containing moist dirt.

According to Starr’s website, “85% of the materials utilized to make the buildings came from dug dirt here on site” and “all the structures were made utilizing minimum resources, materials, and supplies that are readily available.” Coffee cans were placed into the lengthy, continuous sandbags one at a time.

Coldwell Banker Realty is marketing the home. James Bianco, the listing agent, discussed how Khalili contributed to the method’s development and cited its custom of employing domes as a kind of structural support when building buildings with an outer space purpose.

The result was a shelter using the most stable of all architectural elements — the arch, or dome — and he also found local materials that would insulate and protect, according to Bianco, who spoke to Business Insider. ‘He was assigned in the mid-80s by NASA to design for lunar and space habitation,’ Bianco said.

Small windows are used inside the house to block off the harsh desert light throughout the day.

The walls of the rooms have bathtubs and shelves.

There is a complete bathroom and shower in every bedroom.

The home has two “social domes,” a fully equipped kitchen, and a dining room.

Rugged desert routes may be used to reach the residence.

According to Business Insider, Bonita Domes is now the third most expensive residence offered in the Joshua Tree region.

The 181 properties presently on the market in the region are priced between $119,999 and $18 million, with a median price of $440,000.
