UK Eurovision hopeful Mae Muller shares her pre-performance ritual and empowerment message

Mae Muller, the UK’s Eurovision representative, has revealed her pre-performance ritual of drinking herbal tea with honey from a Harry Styles mug.

The singer, who will perform her track I Wrote A Song, described the tea and mug as giving her “good vibes” and said she knew that she would be okay if Harry was with her.

Muller secured her first publishing deal while working at a pub, and has since released three EPs and supported Little Mix on their 2019 stadium tour.

Her track Better Days became popular on TikTok and climbed the charts in 2021, and she performed the song on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Muller will be hoping to build on the success of last year’s UK contestant, Sam Ryder, who topped the Eurovision jury vote in Turin, Italy, but came runner-up to Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra after a symbolic show of public support saw them take first place with 631 points.

The north London-raised vocalist was chosen to represent the UK at Eurovision by TaP Music, the same music company that scouted Ryder, and said she felt it was a “huge honour”.

Muller’s song I Wrote A Song was inspired by her personal experiences and aims to empower listeners, helping them to navigate negative emotions such as heartbreak and emerge from them feeling confident.

This year, the Eurovision Song Contest is taking place in Liverpool, with the UK hosting the event on behalf of Ukraine, which won the last contest.

Muller had the opportunity to meet King Charles III and Queen Camilla at an event in Liverpool, where Charles gave her encouragement and said he would be “egging her on”.

Camilla echoed his sentiments, stating that Muller would not receive “nul points”.

37 countries will participate in Eurovision this year, with Ukraine automatically qualifying for the grand final as the 2022 winners.

The so-called “big five” countries, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, also receive a free pass to the final because of their financial contributions to the event.

The Eurovision semi-finals will be broadcast on BBC One on Tuesday May 9 and Thursday May 11, with the grand final taking place on Saturday May 13 at 8 pm.
