Transnet reports that operations at its Cape Town terminals have returned to normal after backlogs caused by recent strike action have been resolved.
As part of preparations for the forthcoming deciduous fruit season, the ports and rail company stated that the Cape Town Container Terminal will be operating at full capacity to “ensure vessels are turned around promptly.”
“Transnet is encouraged by the rapid clearance of backlogs and plans to continue in this positive vein to ensure the success of the deciduous fruit season.
“In preparation for the upcoming season, a second Ship-to-Shore (STS) crane was successfully delivered and turned over to operations. This will equip the terminal with maximum crane deployment to increase ship working hours, thereby boosting productivity and customer service, according to the company.
Meanwhile, Transnet announced that the Ports of Mossel Bay and Saldhana have been granted Port of Entry status, allowing them to expand their services.
“The Port of Entry status will positively impact the Cruise Tourism industry, especially expedition luxury cruises that wish to visit only smaller ports and passenger vessels.” The ports are finalizing the provision of facilities to enable and manage full Port of Entry Status, according to Transnet.
The ports and rail company stated that its capital investment program for infrastructure development enables it to continue repositioning the ports of Cape Town, Mossel Bay, and Saldhana for more effective trade.
“Transnet National Ports Authority…is deliberate about prioritizing capital projects that will create future capacity while not neglecting the immediate needs necessary to improve port efficiencies.”
The Western Region’s capital investment programme for the 2022/23 fiscal year allocates R260,4 million to the Port of Cape Town, R10,2 million to the Port of Mossel Bay, and R182 million to the Port of Saldanha, according to Transnet.
