Tram passengers are amazed as a Cockatoo uses Opal Card

On the way to the casino, a savvy cockatoo rode alongside Sydney residents on public transportation and even paid its fare.

On Sunday night, Cookie, a yellow-crested cockatoo, joined passengers on the tram from Central Station to the Star Casino.
Despite the bird playing with the card in its mouth and then dropping it on the floor, Tiktok users were impressed by the cockatoo’s decorum.

‘Cookie is the coolest,’ one person said.

‘I would’ve said, ‘Excuse me, you dropped this,’ as soon as Cookie dropped the Opal Card. ‘Then put it back in its mouth,’ said another.

Cookie’s 10,000 followers saw another video of the bird perched on its owner’s arm, carrying an opal card in its beak.

‘Well, NSW PTC can’t come at him!!’ laughed one viewer. ‘He’s tapped on!’ says the state, referring to the procedure of checking whether or not a passenger has paid their fare.

The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo’s boisterous cry can be heard in many places of eastern and northern Australia.

When seen from afar, flocks of hundreds of snow-white birds with pale yellow crests can be stunning, but up close, their calls can be deafening.

Cockatoos spend the majority of their time in flocks, feeding on the ground or sleeping in trees together.

These birds are incredibly intelligent and are frequently hand-reared by humans from the age of three weeks, making them great companions.

They can learn as much as a one- or two-year-old human toddler and are frequently taught to speak words and phrases.
