Inquest Reveals Tragic Collision: Bridgend Mourns Loss of Beloved Cyclist
A heartwrenching incident occurred in Bridgend when an “adorable and vibrant” elderly cyclist, Jose Fernandez-Castro, tragically lost his life after colliding with a car at a junction.
The 85-year-old retired chef passed away in the hospital on October 31, 2019, 12 days after the collision, as a result of “blunt chest injury.”
The Collision and Medical Condition: During an inquest at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court on July 14, it was revealed that Mr. Fernandez-Castro, who battled early dementia, atrial fibrillation, and heart disease, remained active by regularly cycling.
On October 19, while riding his pedal cycle across the junction between Tremains Road and Minerva Street in Bridgend, the collision with a car occurred, leading to blunt injuries on his head, shoulder, chest, and arm.
He was immediately taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, where he was admitted, but his condition ultimately deteriorated, resulting in his passing.
Cause of Death: The medical cause of Mr. Fernandez-Castro’s death was determined to be complications of blunt chest injury, along with ischaemic and hypertensive heart disease.
The area coroner, Patricia Morgan, recorded a conclusion of road traffic collision for the incident.
