Toronto’s Pearson Airport to place “hard limit” on flights arriving or departing during peak times ahead of March Break

Toronto’s Pearson Airport will implement a “hard limit” on the number of flights arriving or departing during peak travel times ahead of March Break and the summer travel season.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which operates the airport, will put measures in place to “flatten peak-hour schedules,” including limits on commercial and general aviation flights, and a cap on passengers arriving internationally or departing to the United States through each terminal per hour. The GTAA has not provided details on the cap limits.

The GTAA explained that the limits placed on the number of incoming and outgoing flights are meant to “strike a balance between airline commercial interests and the capabilities of the entities across the entire airport ecosystem … to deliver successfully on travel demand.”

Last year, the airport faced disruptions, including flight delays, cancellations, and hours-long bottlenecks at security, causing many passengers to experience difficulties.

The GTAA and airlines blamed the issues on a lack of security screening staff, ongoing federal COVID-19 restrictions, and aircraft movement limitations.

The GTAA stated that it is “analyzing and optimizing” its staffing plans and increasing the frequency of testing and training around key areas of the baggage system. It also plans to install AI technology to streamline gate operations, notify ground handlers and baggage workers, and “reduce delays and optimize the time planes spend at the gates.”
