Toowoomba residents are advised to remain indoors while police speak with an allegedly armed man

Residents of a small town west of Brisbane have been urged to remain indoors as police talk with a man they believe to be armed.

Wednesday just before noon, Queensland Police issued an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) in Toowoomba.

About 10:45 a.m., police arrived to search the Newtown property. The cause for the search is unknown at this time.

Residents within the Toowoomba emergency zone (above, in blue) have been warned by police to remain indoors as discussions continue with an allegedly armed man.

Upon arrival, officers initiated negotiations with the individual. It is assumed that another male is present inside.

Just before noon, the police announced a state of emergency and advised inhabitants along Tor Street, Park Street, and Dalmany Street to remain indoors.

Officers have evacuated some Park Street residents and have stated that further residents would be relocated if required.

All highways leading into the disaster area have been closed.
