As a sign of respect for the Queen, the beeps have been toned down on the till scanners at Morrisons.

The unexpected action is a part of a larger decision that has led to the businesses’ removal of music and tannoy announcements.

The usual cheery music playlist at other stores has been replaced with a somber one.

Government policy on how shops should conduct themselves during the time of mourning is not publicly available. Morrisons verified that even though the beep volume has been reduced, it is still audible.

Most chain stores will close on Monday as the funeral takes place, among them John Lewis, Waitrose, Homebase, Aldi, Apple and Primark. Harrods will also shut, with others expected to close from 10am to 2pm.

Chief operating officer at John Lewis, Andrew Murphy, confirmed store closures, saying: ‘We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

‘We are closing our stores on the day of her funeral as a mark of respect, and because we believe this is the right thing to do for our Partners and customers.’

The official government advice is: ‘Some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the state funeral, however, this is at the discretion of individual businesses.’
