Thembi Kgatlana has been cleared to play in the United States after a lengthy injury layoff

Thembi “Pikinini” Kgatlana will depart South Africa on Friday to join her new teammates at Racing Louisville in Kentucky, United States, after receiving medical clearance from the SA Football Association’s (Safa) chief medical officer Thulani Ngwenya.

Kgatlana has been suffering from an injury she sustained during the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July. Additionally, there were concerns that she might not heal in time for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Ngwenya recently informed a media conference at the Safa House, “She has been discharged from the orthopod and all other medical personnel.”

“We have been in frequent contact with her staff in the United States, and they are pleased with the progress we’ve made. She has accomplished something spectacular and is prepared to play once more. I can assure you that she will be available for the World Cup.”

Kgatlana disclosed to the Safa website, “I cannot wait to meet my new colleagues at Kentucky, but I am still undergoing Achilles tendon rehabilitation. I am close to complete recovery and am currently attempting to attain full fitness via running.

Racing Louisville has signed a two-year contract with Kgatlana.

Danny Jordaan, the president of Safa, is ecstatic that Kgatlana is finally traveling to Kentucky to resume her profession after a lengthy injury layoff.

“We at Safa are quite pleased with Thembi’s development, and we are thrilled that she is returning to the field. We wish her the best as she begins on this new phase of her career in the United States,” Jordaan added.

Kgatlana revealed that she has missed playing and praised her Kentucky teammates for their assistance since she sustained an injury. In the website, she is cited as saying, “The club [Racing Louisville] has been extremely helpful, and I applaud them for that.”

Prior to joining Racing Louisville, Kgatlana played for Spanish powerhouses Atletico Madrid, Eibar, Benfica, Beijing Phoenix, and Houston Dash, among others.
