The US government announced an additional $3 million to help the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s political processes be inclusive, credible, and transparent (DRC).

This $3 million will support qualified, impartial international and local observers of the DRC’s presidential and legislative elections in 2023.

It includes $2 million from USAID’s Elections and Political Processes Fund and $1 million in new funding from the Department of State’s Africa Regional Democracy Fund.

Citizens in the DRC will be able to comprehend, take part in, and have faith in their elections if independent, impartial observers provide timely and accurate reports on the country’s electoral process.

The Biden-Harris Administration appreciates President Tshisekedi’s pledge to hold elections on time, which he reaffirmed at the Summit for Democracy, and his invitation to electoral monitors.

Support for improved political and electoral processes will help the DRC have more inclusive, fair, and free elections while also fostering a culture of democratic electoral reform.

The Independent National Electoral Commission of the DRC and civil society organizations will continue to receive support from the United States under USAID’s DRC Elections Integrity Activity until November 2024.

This program involves post-election observation and analysis in addition to training, coaching, and developing organizational tools for poll workers and electoral personnel.

In order to increase the participation of women, youth, and marginalized communities in political and electoral processes, USAID also supports civil society organizations.

It also supports media and civil society in their efforts to spread accurate information about political and electoral processes and to combat false information.

The Congolese people will be supported by the United States as they get ready to take part in fair, trustworthy, and inclusive elections to choose their national leaders.
