The United States provides humanitarian aid through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to solve food insecurity challenge in Cabo Verde

The U.S. is responding to widespread food insecurity in Cabo Verde by providing an initial $100,000 in immediate humanitarian aid through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

This is done in response to the effects of years of drought, the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation, and supply issues brought on by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

During the June to August 2022 lean season, more over 46,000 people—roughly 10% of Cabo Verde’s 480,000 residents—will experience food insecurity, which is more than quadruple the number of those affected during the last peak lean season in 2018.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will be able to provide urgent food assistance for the most vulnerable populations in Cabo Verde that are suffering from severe food insecurity thanks to this early humanitarian aid.

In conjunction with our partners on the ground, USAID disaster experts in Washington, DC, and the surrounding area will continue to closely monitor humanitarian needs.

The United States supports the Cabo Verdean people and will do everything in its power to aid their recovery.
