It is impossible to choose the finest episode of Season 6 of Better Call Saul, but we will attempt to do it nonetheless. While some episodes reach higher emotional peaks, such as Rhea Seehorn’s breakdown in the show’s penultimate episode, Episode 10, “Nippy,” encapsulates everything that made the Breaking Bad spinoff a success on its own.
With just a handful of episodes remaining in the series, the show jumped forward in time to give us a black-and-white Gene Takovic-focused episode that found Saul Goodman’s in-hiding alter ego falling all the way back to his Slippin’ Jimmy (also Odenkirk) days with an epic mall theft caper involving Cinnabon, mazes in a field, and two extremely hapless assistants. As always, the attention to detail is extraordinary, and Odenkirk’s performance ranges from a hilarious duet show with guest stars Jim O’Heir and Carol Burnett to a sequence near the conclusion that demonstrates the full might of Saul Goodman, criminal lawyer.
Gene, Saul, and Jimmy may be the same individual, but Odenkirk demonstrates in this episode the nuanced contrasts between these three guys, while setting the stage for their ultimate demise and perhaps salvation. — Alex Zalben
