The Secretary-General welcomes the decisions on Mali reached by the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at its Ordinary Summit on 3 July in Accra, Ghana.
In particular, he draws attention to the ECOWAS’s decision to suspend sanctions against Mali after making headway in establishing the Transition timeframe. In this regard, the various actions made by the Transition authorities with a view to completing the ongoing Transition by March 2024 at the latest give him hope.
The Local Transition Follow-up Committee, which consists of the African Union, ECOWAS, and MINUSMA, applauds the hard work of the ECOWAS Mediator, H.E. Goodluck Jonathan.
He is eager for this crucial alliance to continue and grow in order to support the efforts of the Mediator.
Additionally, he requests that Mali’s allies lend the country the support it needs to carry out the reforms and hold the upcoming elections while adhering to the highest standards of justice and freedom.
To successfully complete the Transition and create the groundwork for long-term peace and stability for the sake of the Malian people, the Secretary-General strongly urges all stakeholders to continue cooperating in a constructive and consensual manner.
The Secretary General urges all signatory parties to step up their efforts to promote the implementation of the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, including the early holding of the high-level decision-making meeting on Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR).
The Secretary-General affirms the UN’s commitment to helping the Malian people achieve long-term peace, stability, and improved governance.
