The Secretary-General calls on all protestors in Libya to avoid acts of violence

The Secretary-General is concerned about the demonstrations that took place on July 1 in several Libyan cities, including Tripoli, Tobruk, and Benghazi.

Recognizing the right to peaceful protest, he urges all protesters to refrain from violence and security forces to exercise utmost restraint.

The Secretary-General urges all actors to avoid any actions that could jeopardise stability. The Secretary-General calls on Libyan actors to work together to break the country’s political impasse, which is widening divisions and harming the economy.

The United Nations and the Secretary-Special General’s Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, are ready to provide good offices and mediation between parties in order to break the political deadlock as soon as possible by organising elections based on a firm constitutional framework. Recent UN-sponsored meetings in Cairo and Geneva made significant progress, which should be built on.
