The Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act has been passed into law

The passage of the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act has me overjoyed. I share this triumph with the vast majority of single parents in this nation.

Pinersonal ko talaga ang pagtulak na magkaroon ng karagdagang benepisyo ang mga lone parents bilang isang solo mom ng apat na anak. I know exactly how it feels to not know how to pay for my kids’ tuition and to not know who can come with me if one of them becomes sick.

This new law provides provisions for low-income solitary parents with children younger than 6 years old to get a P1,000 monthly cash subsidy, a 10% discount on some medications, priority in low-cost housing, PhilHealth coverage, and educational scholarships, among other things.

Due to the K–12 system, single parents who are able to provide for their children up until the age of 22 represent a significant portion of the population. Those who are single parents generally are the ones who we recommend this probisy to.

I had never experienced such a powerful grassroots, on-the-ground drive for a bill to pass as a senator in the 18th Congress. We fulfilled our promise and more. Our efforts have paid off.
