The Exorcist” was rated the scariest film ever made.

The 1973 horror film directed by William Friedkin and starring Linda Blair as 12-year-old Regan MacNeil, who is possessed by a demon, topped a British poll to choose the “scariest” horror film ever.

With 12% of the vote, it defeated competitors such as the Jodie Foster thriller The Silence of the Lambs and the 1980 classic The Shining.

Showcase Cinemas, which commissioned the study, was represented by Mark Barlow, who stated: “Our visitors continue to enjoy horror films throughout the entire year, not just around Halloween, because they feature so many memorable characters and scenes.

“Our poll also found that scary movies are the most popular aspect of Halloween in the United Kingdom. As a result, we will be screening some iconic Halloween films in the days leading up to the holiday so that our customers may experience frightful sequences on the big screen.”

In addition, voters determined that the scene in which Regan’s head spins 360 degrees while possessed was the “scariest scene in film history.”

Classics such as Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” which was based on a Robert Bloch novel and starred Anthony Perkins as infamous motel owner Norman Bates, and Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” which was banned in several countries at the time of its release due to its depiction of murderous violence, rounded out the top ten.
