The Biden administration plans to import baby formula from Mexico, as ten states are currently 90 percent out of stock.

As the scarcity worsens, President Joe Biden’s government is sending in baby formula from Mexico. Ten states are now 90 percent out of stock of the newborn food.

Beginning in July and ending in October, the Food and Drug Administration said that Nestle’s plant in Mexico will bring in around 1.3 million cans – or nearly 33 million full-size, 8-ounce bottles – of Gerber Good Start Gentle general formula.

The US Department of Health and Human Services is examining options for bringing the items to the United States as soon as feasible,’ according to a statement from the agency.

After a scarcity was generated when Abbott Nutrition, one of the largest makers, stopped its Michigan plant in February due to a bacterium contamination, the FDA moved to make it simpler for baby formula to be imported – the US generally manufactures 98 percent of the formula it needs.

Across the country, the shortage is worsening.

According to data from Datasembly, out-of-stock rates nationwide rose to 74 percent for the week ending May 28, up 4% from the previous week.

In addition, ten states, including Arizona, Mississippi, California, Nevada, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Louisiana, Florida, and Washington, currently have out-of-stock rates of 90% or higher.

Georgia is the state that has been affected the most, with a rate of 94 percent, up from 74 percent the week before.

The Biden administration is attacking the problem head-on, as officials try to figure out why President Biden didn’t learn about the crisis until two months after it began.

The executives told President Barack Obama in a meeting with formula manufacturers at the White House on Wednesday – when Abbott Nutritional was conspicuously absent – that they knew there would be a shortage as soon as the Abbott factory in Strugis, Michigan, closed in February.

Their remarks raised questions about why Biden and his administration did not act sooner to increase the amount of formula produced and available on shop shelves.

Due to the shutdown, food store shelves were barren, formula prices skyrocketed, and parents were apprehensive about feeding their children.

Biden defended his administration’s response, stating that once they realized the severity of the crisis, they ‘kicked everything into gear.’

‘I don’t think anyone anticipated the impact of one factory,’ Trump remarked on Wednesday, referring to Abbott’s Michigan plant, which produces infant formula.

‘Once we saw the scope of it and how wide it was, we kicked everything into high gear.’ In answer to reporters’ questioning, he stated, “I believe we’re on our approach to being able to completely fix the situation.”

However, when asked why the administration did not act sooner in light of the CEOs’ concerns, Biden said he was unaware of the situation.

He admitted, ‘They did, but I didn’t.’ He stated that he initially became aware of the problem in April.

Reckitt executive Robert Cleveland told Biden that his company anticipated the consequences of the Abbott formula recall in February and immediately contacted retailers.

‘We knew this was going to be a big deal from the start,’ he stated during Wednesday’s zoom meeting. ‘We were aware of the broader implications of this.’

He claimed that they instructed merchants like as Target and Walmart to order additional formula and stock everything they had on hand.

Murray Kessler, CEO of Perrigo Company, which makes generic formula brands, said they were aware of the’shortage.’

When we initially learned about the Abbott recall, we knew it would result in a massive shortage,’ Kessler added.

They informed the Food and Drug Administration, he added.

‘We immediately started communicating with the FDA, and we started working closely with the FDA, our retail customers, and other stakeholders to identify and prioritize what was most important,’ he said.
