Terry Pendry to be installed as a ‘military knight’ at Windsor Castle

Today, Queen Elizabeth’s former head groom, Terry Pendry, will be installed as a ‘military knight’ at Windsor Castle, allowing him to spend the rest of his days at the late monarch’s Berkshire home. Pendry, who was always by the Queen’s side during her rides around the estate, shared a passion for horses with her and took part in one of the most emotional moments of her funeral, bringing her favorite horse, Emma, to say goodbye.

In December, Pendry retired despite being offered a job for life by the King, feeling that things wouldn’t be the same without his old mistress.

However, he will be created as a military knight at St George’s Chapel, a position that comes with a home in the Lower Ward of the castle for the rest of his life. Founded in the 14th century by King Edward III, the Military Knights of Windsor, usually retired army officers, carry out duties at Windsor all year round, including weekly Sunday parades and the annual Order of the Garter ceremony.

This position is unpaid but offers a home for life, which is usually until the end of their days. A source has stated that “Her late Majesty would see this as fitting and be comforted” by Pendry’s appointment as a military knight.
