A rogue wave smashed Clovelly Beach in Sydney, injuring two persons who were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. today, a man and a woman were rescued from rocks after being struck by a rogue swell at an otherwise tranquil beach in the eastern suburbs.

Before lifeguards and rescue personnel arrived, bystanders gave help to the duo.

According to one witness, one was briefly unconscious before being revived by their companion and able to return to safety.

The pair was able to travel around 350 meters across the rough shoreline to reach the main beach promenade with assistance.

According to lifeguards, the couple was climbing on rocks near the beach, which is popular with scuba divers and snorkelers due to its enclosed nature and abundance of marine life.

One of the pair was temporarily left unconscious after being struck by the wave and carried across rocks, according to reports from the site.

A small throng of bystanders gathered at the site while paramedics treated the two individuals.

At the time of the incident, Clovelly was experiencing a 3m swell, but it is believed that the wave that caused the incident was much larger.

Reports from the scene said one of the couple had been briefly rendered unconscious after being hit by the wave and dragged across rocks

About an hour later, a second photographer escaped unharmed after venturing out onto the cliffs to photograph the sale.

The man was squatting on the rocks near Clovelly Beach, intently focusing his camera on the approaching waves, when he noticed the water began to rise around him.

He gathered his gear and retreated to a different view point, where he once again squatted to shoot photographs.

However, he was taken by surprise when a large wave broke perilously close to where he was perched, almost knocking him over.

The man was able to stay on his feet and maintain control of his camera, and he emerged from the incident with a large, embarrassed grin.
