Silverstone – Fernando Alonso has the “speed, hunger, motivation, and experience” to help Aston Martin take the next step, but if they do not offer a fast enough car for the former world champion, things could become tricky, according to team boss Mike Krack.
In 2023, Alonso will move from Renault-owned Alpine to Aston Martin to replace four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who is retiring at the conclusion of the current season.
“It will be difficult for us. “Typically, drivers with this level of experience do not have this desire to win… especially if they’ve already won,” Krack said in an interview with the BBC released on Tuesday.
“Fernando possesses a singular blend of speed, hunger, motivation, and experience. For us, this is the ideal candidate. The disadvantage is that if the vehicle we give is not of sufficient quality, we are aware that the situation becomes tough.
Krack continued, “We believe having someone like Fernando is crucial for the squad to go the next level.”
This season, Aston Martin has achieved eleven top-ten finishes, with Vettel’s sixth-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix being the team’s best result. Six races remain on the schedule, and Aston is presently tenth of of ten teams in the constructors’ standings.
Krack continued, “You must learn to manage champions, as we did with Sebastian.” “Because these drivers are so demanding, they are extremely challenging to handle.
“I wouldn’t even say Sebastian is that challenging to manage if you are straightforward, honest, and transparent. I believe the same holds true for Fernando.
“When he arrives, he is well aware that we will likely not win our first race together. But he may be confident that we will give it our all and listen to what he has to say…”
