Some sections of the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg, which was severely destroyed by a gas tanker explosion on Christmas Eve 2022, have reopened.
Monday at the hospital, the Gauteng health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko informed the media that all services had been restored and that the hospital will begin a catch-up process to reschedule patients who missed their surgery and radiology appointments.
“I would want to applaud the people for their level of collaboration with the Tambo Memorial [Hospital] during this time. “It is never easy to tell people to go to another area to receive services,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
She commended the role played by the provincial department of infrastructure development, the department of property management, and the department of social services in ensuring that the impacted areas of the hospital are repaired as soon as possible.
The MEC stated that an incident investigation committee has been constituted to conduct interviews with the injured employees and witnesses in order to collect the medical records of the deceased employees.
“The department of social development has been in contact with the impacted individuals and continues to provide trauma counseling to families and food packages to those in need. Social workers have been sent to the families to provide additional assistance.”
She noted that the department is delighted that the police have ended their investigation into the explosion and turned over a file to the National Prosecuting Authority.
More than forty individuals, including hospital workers, were killed in the blast, while many others were critically injured and are still healing in various hospitals.
