After being on the market for five years, T Boone Pickens’ sprawling Texas ranch, known as Mesa Vista Ranch, has finally sold for $60 million less than its listed price of $250 million.
The 65,000-acre estate features man-made rivers, a golf course, a gun range, and a 6,000-foot-long runway and hangar for aeroplanes.
Pickens purchased the initial 2,926-acre tract of land in 1971 and later expanded it by building a mansion, several lodges, and guest houses.
Pickens’ main mansion features five bedrooms, a 30-seat movie theatre, a gatehouse with additional bedrooms, and an elaborate swimming pool that overlooks the ranch.
A separate lodge measures 33,000 square feet and includes seven bedrooms for guests.
Another 12,000-square-foot lake house is also located on the property, complete with 4,000 square feet of porch space.
A grand library with a spiral bookcase is also featured.
Pickens’ passion project also included a veterinary lab and dog kennel for his pets. The estate also boasts a private airport and an apartment designed for pilots to make travelling more convenient for visitors.
Several high-profile figures have stayed at the ranch with Pickens, including Dick Cheney, Nancy Reagan, George W. Bush, country singer George Strait, and media mogul Ted Turner.
Pickens’ health deteriorated after he suffered a series of strokes in 2017 and was hospitalized in July of that year from a ‘Texas-sized fall.’ He initially put the house up for sale when he became ill and had to give up things he loved.
At the height of his wealth in 2007, Pickens was estimated to be worth $3 billion. By his death, his net worth had fallen to an estimated $500 million due to his philanthropic and educational donations. Pickens was married five times, and he died at the age of 91 in September 2019 due to his deteriorating health.
