Stockholm — Swedish scientist Svante Paabo has been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for his studies regarding human evolution.

The laureate was revealed by Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Nobel Committee, on Monday at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

The prize for medicine began a week of Nobel Prize announcements. On Tuesday, the physics prize will be awarded, followed by chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize for 2022 will be awarded on Friday, and the economics prize will be awarded on October 10.

David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian were awarded last year for their studies into how the human body perceives temperature and touch.

The winners will get 10 million Swedish kronor (about $900,000) in cash on December 10. The funds were provided by the prize’s founder, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who passed away in 1895.
