Sure, recalls Brut deodorant sprays nationwide due to benzene

According to a notice released by the Food and Drug Administration, Sure and Brut aerosol deodorant sprays marketed nationwide are being recalled owing to the presence of benzene, a carcinogen.

The recall encompasses all lot numbers with expiration dates on or before August 2023, the company that markets the items, TCP Hot Acquisition dba HRB Brands, said in a press release issued on Wednesday.

“While benzene is not an ingredient in any of the recalled goods, our investigation revealed that unexpected levels of benzene were present in the propellant used to spray the product out of the can,” TCP added.

The consumer products company sold its personal care business to HRB Brands for $44.7 million in cash in 2021.

As a human carcinogen, benzene can be breathed or absorbed via the skin, leading to leukemia and other life-threatening blood diseases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, repeated exposure to benzene, which is widely used in manufacturing, can cause cancer.

Consumers were urged to stop using the recalled products. Those with questions can call (866) 615-0976 or request a refund at www.brutsurerecall2022.com.

The five products impacted by the recall are:

  • Brut Classic Antiperspirant Aerosol (4 oz) (UPC 00827755070085)
  • Brut Classic Antiperspirant Aerosol (6 oz) (UPC 000827755070108)
  • Brut Classic Deodorant Aerosol (10.0 oz) (UPC 00827755070047)
  • Sure Regular Antiperspirant Aerosol (6.0 oz) (UPC 00883484002025)
  • Sure Unscented Antiperspirant Aerosol (6.0 oz) (UPC 00883484002278)

A sixth product was distributed in Canada:

  • Brut Classic Deodorant Aerosol (154g) (UPC 00827755070177)

More than six goods were recalled owing to benzene last year, including six kinds of dry shampoo and conditioner spray from Procter & Gamble.

Coppertone recalled five sunscreen products in late September after discovering that they included benzene, while Johnson & Johnson recalled five sunscreen products in July after discovering that they contained benzene. Hand sanitizer sprays containing benzene were the subject of a second recall with greater distribution.
